A village built on orchards and the research that changed them
East Malling is a village west of Maidstone, in the borough of Tonbridge and Malling, known far beyond Kent for one thing — the horticultural research station founded here in 1913. The ‘Malling’ and ‘Malling-Merton’ apple rootstocks bred on these fields went into orchards around the world, and NIAB still runs its fruit research on the land around the village.
